We recently completed a full damp proofing and plastering project at a domestic property in Long Eaton, Nottingham. The homeowner had started noticing bubbling paintwork, tide marks and flaking plaster at low levels on several interior walls - all classic indicators of rising damp. After a detailed inspection, we confirmed that moisture had been travelling up from the ground due to a breakdown of the property's original damp proof course, which is common in older homes.
To resolve the issue, we began by removing all damaged plaster and contaminated wall materials. This was followed by the installation of a chemical damp proof course, which is injected directly into the masonry to create a new horizontal moisture barrier. This method is highly effective and long-lasting, guaranteeing that ground moisture can no longer rise through the structure.
In some sections of the property, particularly those facing external garden walls, additional moisture was present due to poor drainage and soil retention. To reinforce protection in these areas, we applied a tanking system directly onto the internal masonry. Tanking creates a waterproof membrane across the wall, providing a secondary barrier to stop any lateral water penetration.
Once the damp treatments were complete, our team moved on to restoring the internal surfaces. Damaged wall plaster was removed to a height of 1.2 metres and replaced with a salt-resistant render. We then applied a full skim coat to leave the walls smooth, level and ready for painting or wallpapering once the surfaces have fully dried out. Proper drying time was advised to the client to make sure no future problems would occur once redecoration begins.
This project in Long Eaton involved a full damp protection package - including chemical DPC installation, tanking, new render and plaster skimming. The combination of these treatments not only resolved the existing issues but also put robust measures in place to prevent damp from returning in the future.
We always work with care and attention, especially in occupied homes, making sure to keep disruption to a minimum. Dust protection, clear communication and clean working practices are all part of the service we offer.
In addition to the hands-on work, we also provided the homeowner with clear aftercare instructions. This included advice on ventilation, drying times and redecoration schedules, helping them look after the treated areas moving forward.
