At Midland Preservation Ltd, we recently carried out a full wine cellar conversion in Hucknall, Nottingham. The client had an unused basement in their Victorian home. They wanted to turn it into a secure, climate-controlled space to store wine.
The area was damp, dark and lacked proper ventilation. It also needed structural improvements before any kind of wine storage was possible.
We started by carrying out a detailed survey. We looked at the current condition of the walls, floor and ceiling. We also tested for moisture levels and checked for signs of water ingress. This gave us a clear plan to work from.
Before any other work began, we had to stop moisture from affecting the space. This meant full structural waterproofing.
We installed a complete cavity drainage membrane system. This involved lining all the internal walls and floor with waterproof membrane. The system channels water to a sump and pump system which we also fitted.
This type of setup makes sure that any water entering the basement is safely removed. It’s a trusted method that’s widely used for basements being turned into usable spaces such as wine cellars.
As part of the waterproofing, we also carried out basement tanking. We applied a tanking membrane to all key areas of the brickwork.
Tanking is used to block moisture from penetrating through the masonry. It forms a barrier between the outer walls and the inner room.
To keep wine in good condition, the room needed stable conditions. We fitted insulation, air ventilation and a humidity control system.
This helps maintain a cool, steady environment all year round. A consistent temperature and balanced humidity level are key for wine successful storage.
The client also asked us to install low-energy lighting. The result was a clean, modern finish with traditional features.
The client had a clear vision for the space. They wanted a layout that could grow with their wine collection.
We helped them design a layout that made good use of the floor plan. There is now easy access to each bottle, with room to add more racks in the future.
Before handing over the finished wine cellar, we carried out full checks on all systems. This included the sump pump, ventilation and lighting. We also tested moisture levels again to make sure the basement was dry and stable. The client received full documentation and advice on future upkeep.
