Woodworm Explained
"Woodworm" is the common name given to the larvae of several wood boring beetles, the most common of which in British homes is the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum).
Outdoors, this same beetle infests dead tree trunks and exposed timber, but indoors it causes far more disruption, particularly in suspended timber floors.
Adult beetles emerge in spring and early summer, lay eggs in cracks and joints in timber, and within about a month those eggs hatch into larvae that burrow inward, feeding on the starch and nutrients within the wood for anywhere between two and four years.
Once mature, the larva excavates a pupation chamber just beneath the surface, and the adult beetle that emerges cuts the small round exit hole you're likely to have spotted.
The fine powdery dust left around these holes, known as frass, is usually the clearest sign that an infestation is genuinely active rather than historical.
Signs Of An Active Woodworm Infestation
- Fresh exit holes: pale, clean coloured wood inside the hole suggests recent activity, while darkened or dusty holes are often old.
- Frass around timber: fine powdery dust on or beneath affected wood, a strong indicator beetles are currently active.
- Crumbling timber edges: floorboards or joists that feel soft, spongey or break away easily under light pressure.
- Tunnelling along the grain: damage that follows the direction of the wood grain, often leaving one board badly affected while the one beside it looks untouched.
- Live beetles: small brown beetles seen indoors during spring or early summer, particularly near windowsills.
What Causes Woodworm Infestations?
Woodworm beetles are drawn to timber with a slightly raised moisture content, which is why infestations are so often found alongside damp problems, poor subfloor ventilation, or in older softwood that has never previously been treated.
Second-hand furniture can also introduce eggs into a property that has no existing infestation at all. Suspended timber floors are particularly vulnerable, since the void beneath them frequently holds more moisture and gets far less air movement than the rooms above.
Other Wood Boring Insects We Treat
Common Furniture Beetle accounts for most of the woodworm cases we see, but it isn't the only species that damages timber.
Death Watch Beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum) targets hardwoods such as oak beams and tends to appear where timber has been damp for a long time, and treating it usually calls for a deep penetrating timber paste rather than a standard spray.
Wood Boring Weevil is another species we come across, almost always found in timber that has already been softened by an earlier case of wet rot rather than attacking sound wood on its own.
